The Parti Ouvrier Indépendant (website) is a Trotskyist party established on 14-15 June 2008 in Paris, succeeding the Parti des Travailleurs (PT - Workers' Party). The aim of the POI is "to struggle for socialism, Republic, and democracy"; the party calls for breakaway from the European Union and suppression of the institutions of the 5th Republic, to be replaced by "a genuine government defending the workers and democracy, supported by a Constituent Assembly".
During its 4th Congress, held on 31 May and 1-2 June 2013, the POI
elected a permanent secretary and four national secretaries, Gérard
Schivardi, Jean Markun, Claude Jenet, and Daniel Gluckstein.
Gérard Schivardi (b. 1950), then supported by the PT, obtained 123 540 votes (0.34%) in the 2007 presidential election. Claiming that the
President of the Republic was "useless", Schivardi refused to compete
in the 2012 presidential election.
Daniel Gluckstein (b. 1953) was national secretary of the PT from 1991
to 2008; he obtained 0.47% of the votes in the 2002 presidential
election.
